Work Commences on Algeria’s Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Section

Construction has officially begun on the Algerian section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a significant infrastructure project designed to transport Nigerian gas through Niger and Algeria to European markets. The development was confirmed by Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab during the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh. This marks a tangible step forward after the completion of all feasibility studies, with the official launch of work on the Algerian segment having taken place on June 4.

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is strategically important, initially targeting the transport of approximately 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Europe. Plans allow for a potential expansion of its capacity to 30 billion cubic meters per year. Algeria is actively collaborating with Nigeria and Niger to finalize preparations for the remaining sections of the pipeline, reinforcing regional energy cooperation and infrastructure development.

This project underscores Algeria's commitment to enhancing its role in global energy markets and strengthening energy security. By investing in such a crucial transportation artery, Algeria leverages its existing robust energy infrastructure and network, aligning with its broader strategy to increase production capabilities and meet growing domestic and international demand. The TSGP is poised to contribute significantly to diversifying gas supplies for European markets and solidifying Algeria's position as a key energy provider.
