Gnaoua Music Festival in Aïn Sefra: First Prize Awarded to “Al-Balaliya” from Mohammedia

Naâma – The 15th edition of the National Cultural Festival of Gnaoua Music concluded Thursday evening at the “Arafaoui Mohamed” Stadium in Aïn Sefra, Naâma Province, with the “Al-Balaliya” troupe from Mohammedia (Mascara Province) claiming first place.

Vibrant Performances Celebrate Cultural Heritage

The “Al-Balaliya” troupe, consisting of young musicians dressed in traditional attire, captivated the audience with a colorful and dynamic performance. Their repertoire combined traditional songs and dances, accompanied by iconic Gnaoua instruments such as the “Guembri” and the “Tendinit.”

Their exceptional skills earned the admiration of both the audience and the judging panel, affirming their dedication to preserving this rich cultural legacy.

Other Winners

  • Second Place: “Gargab Zahwa” from Adrar.
  • Third Place (Tied): “Noujoum Diwan” from Sidi Bel Abbès and “Gnaoua Al-Meggar” from Tindouf.

A special award was presented to the “Sidi Bilal” troupe from Mascara, recognizing their promising talent. They delivered a soulful set filled with authenticity and spirituality, using traditional percussion instruments such as the “Karkabou” and drums.

Tributes and Cultural Activities

The closing ceremony honored the late Mohamed Bahazmen, a prominent figure in Gnaoua music known for his contributions to the genre, including his work on the soundtrack of the renowned war film The Battle of Algiers.

The festival also paid tribute to the late artist Hassna El Bechari, celebrating her rich artistic legacy. The ceremony was attended by local officials and a large, enthusiastic audience, especially youth.

Held under the theme “Gnaoua Music and the Challenges of Cultural Globalization: Preserving Identity,” the festival featured a range of activities, including:

  • Concerts and Performances: Showcasing over 160 artists from across Algeria.
  • Exhibitions: Traditional Gnaoua attire and musical instruments displayed at the “Belkacem Baghdadi” Cultural Annex in Aïn Sefra.
  • Lectures: Focused on the history and significance of Gnaoua music in Algerian cultural heritage.

The event concluded with a well-organized final evening, leaving the audience eager for the next edition of this cultural celebration.
