Algeria Prepares for Expo 2025 in Japan: Minister Madahi Chairs Coordination Meeting

Algiers – Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Madahi, chaired a coordination meeting with sector officials to evaluate Algeria’s participation in the Italian International Exhibition of Handicrafts and to review preparations for Algeria’s presence at Expo 2025 in Osaka-Kansai, Japan, according to a statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday.

The meeting, held on Monday evening, assessed Algeria’s representation at the 28th edition of the International Handicrafts Exhibition in Milan, where Algeria participated as the guest of honor for Africa. Discussions also focused on the preparations for showcasing Algeria’s tourism and handicrafts sector at Expo 2025, which will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025.

Minister Madahi emphasized the importance of Algeria’s participation in international events, highlighting their economic, cultural, and promotional significance for Algeria as a tourist destination. She stressed achieving tangible economic outcomes, such as boosting sales of traditional crafts, increasing international tourism, and addressing previously identified shortcomings to improve future participation.

Evaluating Algeria’s Milan Exhibition Performance

The Director-General of the National Chamber of Handicrafts and Artisans, along with other representatives, presented reports highlighting the success of Algeria’s participation in Milan. They noted the diverse representation, rich cultural program, and the strong presence of Algeria’s diaspora and visitors at the Algerian pavilion. The display included traditional dishes and sweets from various regions of Algeria, which attracted significant attention.

Minister Madahi issued directives for future international events, stressing the importance of representing all regions of Algeria, particularly the southern provinces. She also called for organizing training sessions for artisans on display and sales techniques, in coordination with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education.

Preparations for Expo 2025

Focusing on Algeria’s participation in Expo 2025 in Japan, Minister Madahi highlighted the need for meticulous preparation, ensuring inclusive and high-quality representation. She emphasized the exclusive use of modern digital technologies in proposed activities and programs related to tourism and traditional crafts.

The minister also underscored aligning proposed activities with the event’s theme, “Designing Future Societies for Our Lives,” and setting a strict timeline to finalize preparations by the end of January 2025.

Additionally, the minister recommended involving university students specializing in translation to gain experience and support artisans in promoting traditional craft products. She also called for enhancing partnerships with similar institutions in tourism and handicrafts to foster trade agreements.
