Algeria’s Mining Sector Accelerates Implementation of Key Structural Projects

Algiers – The Algerian mining sector experienced significant transformation in 2024, marked by the commencement of strategic projects and the acceleration of others. These projects, prioritized for their multifaceted impact, are set to boost the national economy and diversify exports beyond hydrocarbons.

According to Belkacem Soltani, CEO of the Sonarem Industrial Mining Group, the year 2024 was highly productive, with the sector achieving 95% of its outlined objectives. These efforts align with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing the rapid execution of structural mining projects to drive economic growth.

Key Projects Underway

Among the projects highlighted by Sonarem are:

  1. Gara Djebilet Iron Mine (Tindouf):
    • With an estimated 3.5 billion tons of iron ore reserves, operations at Gara Djebilet commenced with initial production of 2-3 million tons annually.
    • A processing plant launched in December 2023 is set to enhance value addition, and further units for primary processing and transformation will be operational by late 2025.
    • A 950 km railway line is under construction to connect Béchar, Tindouf, and Gara Djebilet, with the first segment (Béchar-Abadla, 98 km) expected to be completed by Q1 2025.
  2. Integrated Phosphate Project (Tébessa):
    • This project aims to position Algeria among the leading global exporters of fertilizers.
    • In 2024, initial extraction of raw phosphate began, alongside the development of a complex for producing phosphate-based and nitrogen fertilizers in Souk Ahras.
    • The project also includes a 23 km railway linking the mine to eastern railway lines, completed within a year to facilitate transportation to processing plants.
  3. Zinc and Lead Mine (Tala Hamza, Béjaïa):
    • Holding over 54 million tons of reserves (34 million tons exploitable over 20 years), this project progressed with the signing of contracts for mine development and the construction of a processing plant.
    • The project involves a partnership between Algeria-Australia’s Western Mediterranean Zinc (WMZ) and China’s Sinosteel, with an accelerated implementation plan.

Discovery of Unexpected Mineral Resources

In 2024, exploration efforts in 23 provinces yielded promising results, uncovering previously unknown mineral deposits. These discoveries will refine Algeria’s mining map and support the establishment of industrial clusters for value-added processing industries.

Strategic Vision and Economic Impact

The mining projects are integral to President Tebboune’s strategy of economic diversification and regional development. These initiatives are expected to generate local employment, foster industrial activities, and improve infrastructure, particularly railway networks.

Sonarem remains committed to ensuring timely project delivery by providing necessary resources and maintaining continuous oversight.
