Startups: Exploring Ways to Strengthen the Role of the Algerian Diaspora in the Country’s Economic Dynamism

Algiers – The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, held discussions on Thursday, January 16, 2025, with the Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Microenterprises, Mr. Nourredine Wadah. The talks, which took place in the capital, focused on mechanisms to enhance the contribution of Algeria’s diaspora to the country’s economic dynamism, particularly in the fields of startups and innovation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

The statement highlighted that “in line with the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to support members of the Algerian community abroad in investing in their homeland, the meeting explored practical approaches to reinforce the diaspora’s role in Algeria’s economic transformation, with a specific emphasis on startups and innovation as key pillars of the national economy.”

During the meeting, Mr. Chaib emphasized that members of the Algerian diaspora, especially the younger generation, are deeply interested in investing in the startup and innovation sectors. He noted that these sectors have become driving forces of development in numerous countries and that this interest was consistently expressed during his interactions with the diaspora.

In this context, Mr. Chaib reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with various governmental sectors to create a conducive framework that would enable innovative entrepreneurs from the diaspora to implement their projects in Algeria.

On his part, Mr. Wadah stated that his ministry is fully committed to achieving these goals. He stressed that enabling Algeria’s talents abroad to contribute to this sector, particularly in areas like innovation, artificial intelligence, and services, would significantly enhance the government’s ongoing efforts to transform the economy.

The two officials concluded the meeting by agreeing to establish a joint working group between the two sectors. This team will oversee the implementation of the discussed initiatives in the shortest possible timeframe, aligning with Algeria’s new economic vision and creating opportunities for the diaspora to invest in their homeland.
