Algiers – The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. James Robert Stephen Downer, affirmed on Thursday, January 16, 2025, that Algeria is a major partner for the UK in Africa.
Speaking after presenting his credentials to the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Ambassador Downer stated, “We consider Algeria a key partner for the United Kingdom in Africa.” He emphasized that his government is “ready to move forward in strengthening cooperation with Algeria in all fields.”
The British ambassador highlighted that the relationship between Algeria and the United Kingdom is “strong and based on a spirit of partnership and mutual respect.” He noted that the two nations enjoy close ties in areas such as trade, defense, culture, and education. He also acknowledged Algeria’s growing interest in the use of the English language as a medium of education.
On this occasion, Ambassador Downer expressed the UK’s desire to “develop its partnership with Algeria in addressing climate change and tackling the challenges of energy transition.” He also mentioned the importance of “expanding industrial and service sector cooperation to support growth in both countries.”
The ambassador added, “We can do more together to address the various challenges the world faces today.”
In addition, Mr. Downer highlighted the cooperation between the two nations within the framework of the United Nations Security Council, particularly with Algeria assuming its presidency of the council. He expressed optimism about further enhancing this collaboration.
The British diplomat also shared his personal enthusiasm for learning more about Algeria, stating his intention to “explore this unique country with its rich history and vibrant youth by visiting as many provinces as possible to discover Algeria’s geography, culture, and diverse cuisine.”
This partnership underscores the growing strategic importance of Algeria for the UK, as both nations work together to strengthen bilateral ties and address global challenges.
