Algiers – Salma Bakhita Mansouri, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of African Affairs, represented Algeria at the High-Level Committee meeting of the African Union on South Sudan (C5). The event, held in Juba, aimed to follow up on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and strengthen coordination with regional and international partners to promote stability, peace, and sustainable development in South Sudan, according to a statement from the ministry issued on Friday.
The meeting also witnessed high-level participation from representatives of major organizations and stakeholders, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC). In addition, ambassadors of African nations accredited to South Sudan were also in attendance.
As part of the agenda, members of the C5 committee held discussions with Riek Machar Teny, the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan. The talks focused on challenges hampering the implementation of the peace agreement and emphasized the importance of cooperation among all parties to overcome obstacles, accelerate the peace process, and ensure security and stability in the country, according to the ministry’s statement.
During her intervention, Ms. Mansouri highlighted the critical importance of fully and effectively implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement as a cornerstone for achieving national reconciliation and stability in South Sudan. She stressed that the activation of the agreement’s provisions is a necessary step toward fostering lasting peace and creating a favorable environment for sustainable development, ultimately improving the living conditions of the South Sudanese people.
