Herning (Denmark) – The Algerian men’s handball team suffered a 23-32 defeat against Italy in the second round of Group 2 at the 2025 World Handball Championship (January 14 – February 2). The match, played on Thursday evening at the Herning Arena in Denmark, saw Italy leading 16-11 at halftime.
This marks the Algerian team’s second consecutive loss in the tournament, following their heavy 22-47 defeat against Denmark on Tuesday.
Italy’s standout performance in the first half was largely due to their goalkeeper, Ebner, who made an impressive 12 saves out of 29 Algerian attempts. On the Algerian side, Ayoub Abdi and Messaoud Berkous were the top scorers, contributing six goals each.
With this victory, Italy temporarily leads Group 2 with 4 points, awaiting the outcome of the second match of the day between Denmark and Tunisia (scheduled for 8:30 PM local time). Meanwhile, Algeria shares the third spot in the group with Tunisia, both without any points.
Upcoming Matches
In the third round, scheduled for Saturday, January 18, Algeria will face Tunisia at 6:00 PM in a much-anticipated Maghreb derby. This match will determine the third team from the group to qualify for the main round. On the same day, Denmark and Italy will clash at 8:30 PM to compete for the top spot in the group.
The top three teams from each group will advance to the main round of the tournament.
