Algeria has officially handed over the rescued Spanish citizen, Joaquim Navarro Cañada, to representatives of his country. The handover took place on Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs. Navarro Cañada was abducted in mid-January near the Algerian-Malian border.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry, Mr. Lounes Mokramane, presided over the handover ceremony, delivering the rescued individual to the Spanish Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Fernando Morán Calvo-Sotelo.
Successful Rescue Operation by Algerian Forces
It is worth noting that the Spanish citizen, who was in “good health” at the time of his rescue, was retrieved on Tuesday by security forces of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP). According to a statement by the Ministry of National Defense, Navarro Cañada was on a tourist trip when he was kidnapped on January 14 in the Algerian-Malian border area within the jurisdiction of the Sixth Military Region. The abduction was carried out by an armed gang consisting of five individuals.
Following the successful rescue, the Spanish citizen was transported via a special aircraft from Tinzaouatine Airport in the Sixth Military Region to Boufarik Air Base in the First Military Region, ensuring his safe return.
This operation once again demonstrates Algeria’s steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of foreign nationals within its territory and combating organized crime and terrorism along its borders.
