Morocco: Government Faces Criticism and Accusations Over Failure to Achieve Social Justice

Rabat – Criticisms of the Moroccan government, accusing it of being “out of touch with reality,” have intensified, placing Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in the dock for his failures in achieving social protection for all Moroccans “without exception” and addressing rights violations. Critics argue that his reliance on “patchwork solutions” has exacerbated economic fragility, entrenched poverty, and inequality.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights, in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on the occasion of World Day of Social Justice (February 20), criticized the “weakness of social protection policies that have proven ineffective in addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.” The association emphasized that achieving social justice is “not a luxury but a fundamental pillar of stability and development. Any delay in addressing existing imbalances will deepen social crises and create more tension, potentially harming overall stability.”

The letter highlighted that “national and international reports have shown that Morocco faces structural challenges in achieving social justice.” It pointed out that “a significant portion of national wealth is concentrated in the hands of a minority of companies and wealthy families, while millions of Moroccans live in difficult conditions, exacerbated by rising inflation and declining purchasing power.”

The association also criticized high unemployment rates, especially among educated youth, and the prevalence of informal employment, which excludes many from social protections and decent working conditions. It called for combating corruption and monopolies by holding economic offenders accountable, tightening market oversight, and enhancing transparency in the management of public resources.

Regarding education, the letter highlighted structural problems in the public school system and the high dropout rates, which have worsened social disparities. In the health sector, the association noted the shortage of human resources and weak infrastructure, making healthcare inaccessible for large segments of the population, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The association warned that “continuing these imbalances threatens social stability and entrenches exclusion and marginalization.” It criticized the government for relying on “ineffective patchwork solutions that fall short of achieving social justice.”

In a sharp critique, the Justice and Development Party accused the Prime Minister of failing to deliver on his promise to achieve social justice. The party emphasized that “a politician must be accountable for the interests of the state and the people, a responsibility that Akhannouch has failed to meet, demonstrating his inability to address crises and handle critical issues that concern Moroccans due to a lack of effective direct support and social protection policies.”

The party warned that the current government is steering the country “towards a dead end due to a lack of trust in its institutions and indecisive, misguided policies, which could lead Moroccans to lose faith completely in the authorities, potentially resulting in severe political and social instability.”
