Morocco: Repression of Anti-Normalization Voices Amid Betrayal of the Palestinian Cause

Rabat – The Moroccan regime continues to face criticism for what many consider a betrayal of the Palestinian cause, particularly following the normalization agreement signed with the Israeli entity. Despite widespread public opposition, authorities have intensified repression against activists who speak out against normalization, including harsh prison sentences and violent crackdowns on peaceful protests.

Among the recent cases, activists Mohamed Bestati and Mohamed El Boustani, affiliated with the Justice and Charity Movement, received severe prison sentences for their anti-normalization stance, highlighting what observers describe as a deteriorating judicial system used to silence dissent.

The Moroccan Front in Support of Palestine and Against Normalization strongly condemned these rulings and denounced the violent treatment of protesters outside the court. Similar incidents occurred in El Jadida, where demonstrators were subjected to aggressive police interventions and arbitrary arrests.

The Front emphasized that this repression aims not only at individuals but also seeks to dismantle the broader anti-normalization movement, which remains vibrant and active, with mass marches across cities denouncing Israeli crimes and reaffirming opposition to normalization.

Calling for continued resistance, the Front announced a national day of protest on Friday, March 28, coinciding with Palestinian Land Day, to reaffirm solidarity with Palestine and reject normalization efforts.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan Committee to Support Political Prisoners (“Hemm”) warned against the growing crackdown on public freedoms and called attention to the broader human rights crisis in the country. The committee expressed concern over the targeting of rights defenders, journalists, and bloggers, noting that Aziz Ghali, President of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, and Hassan Bennajeh, a member of “Hemm,” were recently summoned in what was perceived as an intimidation tactic.

The committee renewed its call for the release of all political detainees, including lawyer Mohamed Ziane, Rif movement prisoners, and anti-normalization bloggers Mohamed Bestati and Redouane El Qassiti, describing the sentences against them as unjust and disproportionate.

Despite growing repression, the Moroccan street remains defiant, affirming that Palestine is a non-negotiable cause, and that no level of oppression will silence the free voices standing against the Zionist agenda.
