Algeria Commits to Training UN Mission Personnel for Greater Field Effectiveness

Berlin – On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Salima Bekhta Mansouri, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of African Affairs, affirmed in Berlin that Algeria is committed to providing training for United Nations peacekeeping missions to enhance their effectiveness in the field and better protect civilians.

Speaking at the UN Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping Operations hosted in the German capital, Mansouri outlined Algeria’s commitment to offering training in four key areas to better prepare UN missions, thereby ensuring more effective civilian protection.

She stated that “Algeria is committed, first and foremost, to providing specialized training in humanitarian demining to assist communities affected by conflicts and to train peacekeeping personnel operating in environments with explosive mines.” This training, she added, “enables the detection, disarmament, and disposal of landmines and unexploded ordnance.”

Mansouri also noted that Algeria will provide training in investigative techniques based on scientific methods, prioritizing international humanitarian law. She emphasized that this training will enhance the ability of UN mission personnel to “document atrocities” committed during conflicts, “particularly in contexts involving widespread atrocities.”

The third area highlighted by Mansouri involves protecting telecommunications systems in peacekeeping operations. She explained that “Algeria will offer training focused on securing telecommunications facilities of UN peacekeeping missions,” noting that this “initiative will equip mission personnel with skills to detect and counter cyber threats while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of their telecommunications equipment.”

Finally, Mansouri stated that Algeria will provide training in military and emergency medicine “to enable peacekeeping personnel to effectively handle medical emergencies in high-risk areas.” This training covers aspects such as emergency evacuation, field treatments, and initial psychological care for conflict victims.

In conclusion, Mansouri underscored that these commitments “reaffirm Algeria’s determination to invest in the credibility and future of collective international peacekeeping efforts.”
