World Bank Again Ranks Algeria Among Upper-Middle-Income Countries

By Nor Eleslam

For the second consecutive year, the World Bank has classified Algeria as an upper-middle-income country in its annual global economic rankings, effective from July 1, 2025. Algeria stands among ten African nations in this category, alongside countries like South Africa and Gabon, and shares the status with Iran, Libya, and Iraq in the MENA and South Asia region. This upgrade, first granted in 2024, followed comprehensive revisions of national economic statistics and income reassessments by the National Statistics Office. Key contributing factors include improved economic growth, increased public investment, stronger productive sectors, enhanced fiscal governance, and better statistical methodologies. The classification, based on gross national income per capita, reflects Algeria’s sustained economic progress amid global developments and rising integration into the world economy.
