Algeria Hosts International Training Workshop on World Heritage with African World Heritage Fund

By Nor Eleslam

The Ministry of Culture and Arts, in collaboration with the African World Heritage Fund, organized a high-level virtual training workshop on World Heritage from July 28 to 31, bringing together experts from leading international bodies and representatives from 27 African countries. This initiative, ahead of a follow-up in-person workshop set for September in Algeria, underscores the country’s commitment to safeguarding African cultural heritage and strengthening international cooperation. The workshop, stemming from a partnership established in May between Minister Zohir Ballou and Fund Director Albino Jopela, focused on equipping African states with tools for preparing robust UNESCO nomination files. Guided by ICOMOS and IUCN experts, participants explored technical standards and evaluation methodologies, aiming to enhance the quality and success rate of heritage site nominations. The event reflects Algeria’s active role in cultural diplomacy and its strategic efforts to build continental capacity for heritage preservation.
