Mascara: Launch of the 10th Excavation at the “Ancient Tighenif Man” Site

Mascara – The tenth archaeological excavation campaign at the “Ancient Tighenif Man” site in the commune of Tighenif, Mascara province, was launched on Tuesday, according to the Directorate of Culture and Arts.

The operation, conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Arts, is being led by Professor Mohamed Sahnouni, researcher at the National Center for Research in Prehistory, Anthropology, and History, alongside a team of archaeologists and specialists from the same institution.

This new phase of excavation focuses on in-depth archaeological digging and exploration across various parts of the “Ancient Tighenif Man” site, which dates back to prehistoric times. The project aims to further enrich previous findings carried out between 2013 and 2024, confirming the site’s estimated age of 1.4 million years.

According to the Directorate, any artifacts or samples unearthed during this 20-day campaign will be transferred to the National Center for Research in Prehistory, Anthropology, and History, where they will undergo scientific study and analysis under the supervision of Professor Sahnouni and his team.

The “Ancient Tighenif Man” site, which spans over one hectare, is officially classified as part of Algeria’s national cultural heritage.
