Algiers – The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Tuesday evening the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is on an official visit to Algeria, according to a statement from the ministry.
The statement clarified that this visit is part of preparations for the upcoming UN Security Council meeting on the Western Sahara issue scheduled for October, during which the envoy will present his report on the efforts undertaken in line with the mandate entrusted to him.
On this occasion, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura in seeking a just, lasting, and definitive solution to the Western Sahara conflict that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s inalienable and timeless right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
Attaf also underscored the central and vital role of the United Nations, stressing that all initiatives must fall under its framework to ensure direct and unconditional negotiations between the two parties to the conflict: the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.
In conclusion, the Minister emphasized Algeria’s firm commitment to upholding the UN’s decolonization principles, underlining the importance of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) as a key expression of the international community’s determination to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa.
