Algiers – The European Union delegation in Algiers and the World Food Programme (WFP) praised on Tuesday Algeria’s key role in addressing the needs of Sahrawi refugees in the camps of Tindouf.
During a meeting dedicated to reaffirming the EU’s commitment to Sahrawi refugees through its continued funding for the UN agency, Aline Rumong, WFP Country Director and Representative in Algeria, highlighted that “for more than 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity by hosting Sahrawi refugees, while the WFP has stood by their side for nearly 40 years, providing essential food assistance.”
She noted that 80 percent of Sahrawi refugees depend entirely on humanitarian aid, while also commending the EU’s constant support and commitment towards these populations. Rumong emphasized that the strong and reliable partnership between the EU and the WFP ensures sustainable financing, which is essential to deliver vital aid while improving the effectiveness of WFP operations in the camps.
For his part, the EU Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, underscored Algeria’s generosity towards Sahrawi refugees over the years, recalling that only a few weeks ago the EU delivered a new €5 million contribution as part of the second year of the multiannual partnership, reaffirming European solidarity with the Sahrawi people.
Meanwhile, the President of the Sahrawi Red Crescent, Yahia Bouhobeini, stressed to APS that this event provides an opportunity to appeal to all donors to extend further contributions in favor of Sahrawi refugees.
