President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is inevitable, based on the 1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, emphasizing that Algeria’s struggle in support of Palestine has always been founded on this principle.
Speaking during his regular media meeting with national press representatives broadcast on Friday, Tebboune highlighted the notable achievements of Algerian diplomacy at the United Nations Security Council, particularly concerning the Palestinian cause. He stressed that Algeria has always argued—whether before the UN, at international forums, or during his state visits—that no solution exists other than the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital. He firmly rejected the illusion of a so-called “Greater Israel.”
The President recalled that the 2022 Arab Summit, hosted in Algiers, prioritized unifying Palestinian ranks under a strong Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. He explained that Algeria subsequently ensured the Palestinian cause was brought before the UN General Assembly, where 143 states voted in favor of Palestine’s full recognition as a member state. Despite this overwhelming support, the veto blocked the effort, a barrier that remains in place today.
When asked about the possibility of Algeria obtaining permanent membership at the UN Security Council, President Tebboune said such a prospect is not impossible, whether for Algeria or other African powers such as Nigeria, South Africa, or Egypt. He reiterated the urgent need to reform the UN system so that Africa secures at least ten seats on the Security Council, including three permanent ones, underscoring Algeria’s unique record of being elected to the Council on four different occasions—a distinction no other nation has achieved.
Turning to regional relations, Tebboune praised the strong and brotherly ties linking Algeria to Mauritania and Tunisia. He noted Algeria’s commitment to assisting its neighbors by helping rebuild vital infrastructure in Mauritania and reaffirmed the unshakable solidarity between Algeria and Tunisia, dismissing hostile rumors as mere provocations.
On the issue of Africa’s future, the President stressed that the destiny of the continent rests in the hands of Africans themselves, who must choose between development and self-destruction through conflict. He insisted that true international support for Africa means providing jobs and investment, not flooding the continent with deadly weapons.
Regarding the latest Zionist aggression against Qatar, Tebboune strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a criminal act against an entire Arab and Muslim nation. He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering principled stance against aggression and occupation, standing firmly for justice, freedom, and the right of peoples—most notably the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples—to self-determination, despite the maneuvers of regimes such as Morocco that continue to undermine regional sovereignty and stability.
