Algiers, September 28, 2025 – The President of the National Observatory of Civil Society, Ibtissem Hamlaoui, announced on Sunday in Algiers the distribution of educational booklets in schools to raise children’s awareness about rabies and prevention methods.
Speaking at the launch of a national awareness campaign on rabies prevention, Ms. Hamlaoui explained that, in cooperation with Mobilis (the national mobile operator) and the National Printing and Publishing Company, booklets will be distributed to schoolchildren across 15 provinces. The initiative aims to teach preventive measures in line with efforts to combat this deadly disease.
Marking the occasion of World Rabies Day, the head of the Observatory emphasized the role of civil society in raising community awareness, highlighting the importance of animal vaccination and immediate medical care in cases of bites or scratches caused by dogs, cats, or rodents, which are the main vectors of the virus.
As part of this effort, Ms. Hamlaoui also launched training sessions for doctors, veterinarians, and vaccination agents, with the goal of enhancing skills, strengthening intervention mechanisms, and improving healthcare management. These sessions are designed to support state-led prevention programs while working alongside associations that manage shelters for stray animals by reinforcing vaccination and sterilization campaigns.
The Observatory’s president further stressed the importance of media involvement in amplifying awareness messages, noting that the campaign relies heavily on mobilizing local associations, organizing caravans, and reinforcing community-level action, particularly in remote areas.
This initiative represents a comprehensive approach to public health prevention in Algeria, combining state institutions, civil society, and private partners to protect citizens from rabies while promoting responsible practices in animal care.
