Algeria has delivered a strong response at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to accusations launched by Mali’s ruling military junta. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the security and stability of its neighborhood and emphasized that relations with neighboring peoples remain a priority.
Attaf dismissed the statements from Bamako’s leaders as nothing more than vulgar rambling, unworthy of serious attention and deserving only contempt. He argued that Mali as a nation cannot be reduced to what he described as a clique clinging to power and oppressing its people, stressing that the country’s history and dignity are far greater than those currently ruling it.
In his speech, Attaf said that for the second consecutive year, Malian coup leaders have dared to use the UN platform to attack Algeria. He denounced what he called the extreme arrogance and mediocrity of their rhetoric, comparing it to the incoherent ranting of a failed soldier, offensive and disgraceful. Instead of blaming others for their failures, he argued, the Malian authorities should focus on restoring security and stability, improving the living conditions of their people, and building a governance system worthy of Mali’s heritage, based on competence, integrity, and accountability.
Despite the hostile remarks from Bamako, Attaf underscored that Algeria’s patience and efforts remain intact. He affirmed that Algeria’s hand will always remain extended to the Malian people, guided by bonds that cannot be shaken by the temporary behavior of those currently in power. He reiterated Algeria’s broader stance toward the Sahel region, highlighting its full commitment to fostering peace, stability, and constructive relations with all its neighbors.
