Algerian Embassy in Madagascar Issues Warning Amid Unrest

The Algerian Embassy in Madagascar has issued a warning to its citizens residing in the country, specifically in the capital city of Antananarivo, due to ongoing unrest and demonstrations. The advisory, released on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, urges Algerian nationals to exercise extreme caution and limit their movements.

According to the embassy’s statement, “Given the current circumstances in the Malagasy capital, the embassy advises all members of the Algerian community residing in Madagascar to stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.” This strong recommendation underscores the severity of the situation on the ground.

The Algerian diplomatic mission further emphasized that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation and remains in constant communication with members of the Algerian community in Madagascar. The embassy pledged to provide any necessary assistance or guidance during this challenging period. Algerians are encouraged to reach out to the embassy for support and information.

The advisory stresses the importance of heightened vigilance, urging individuals to avoid gatherings and strictly adhere to instructions issued by local authorities to ensure their safety and well-being. This reflects a concern that the protests could potentially escalate and pose a risk to public safety, including foreign nationals.

The unrest in Madagascar has been ongoing since the previous month. Reports indicate that the demonstrations initially began on September 25th, fueled by grievances related to water and electricity shortages. Reuters reports these protests were inspired by Generation Z movements in Kenya and Nepal. However, the protests have since broadened in scope and intensity, evolving into a significant challenge to the government of President Andry Rajoelina. His rule has been tested since his reelection in 2023.

The current wave of protests represents one of the most significant challenges to President Rajoelina’s administration since his re-election. The situation is fluid, and the Algerian Embassy’s proactive measures highlight the importance of vigilance and preparedness for Algerian citizens in Madagascar. The embassy will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
