Google has officially stopped selling refurbished Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones through its Google Store, with no immediate replacement announced. This move signals a shift in Google's refurbished device strategy, potentially paving the way for newer models to join the program.
Last October, Google launched its certified refurbished devices program, initially featuring the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, and Pixel 6a. The Pixel 7a was later added to the lineup. Notably, the Pixel 6a was previously removed from the store due to battery performance concerns.
Refurbished devices are pre-owned or overstock units that undergo rigorous testing and restoration by Google before being resold at discounted prices. These devices come with technical support, although they may exhibit minor cosmetic imperfections.
According to 9to5Google, the refurbished Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models have been pulled from the store after being available for $339 and $539, respectively. The removal is likely attributed to the approaching end-of-life for software updates for these phones, despite a previous extension of support. While still functional, Google likely deemed them to be too close to end of life to be sold as refurbished.
Concurrently, Google has reduced the prices of refurbished Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models. The Pixel 7 is now priced at $359 (down from $429), while the Pixel 7 Pro is available for $539 (down from $629). The refurbished Pixel 7a is currently priced at $339. These three phones are now the only remaining options in the program.
Interestingly, the Pixel 8 Pro briefly appeared in the refurbished device list after the launch of the Pixel 9 series, without a listed price. It was quickly removed within 24 hours. This fleeting appearance suggests that Google is planning to introduce newer models to its refurbished device program in the near future. This could be the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro or even the newer Pixel 9 once stock levels allow. Keep an eye on the Google Store for updates on the availability of future refurbished Pixel devices.
This discontinuation of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro signals Google’s commitment to providing customers with relatively up-to-date devices, even in the refurbished market. The price reductions on the Pixel 7 series further enhance the value proposition for consumers seeking affordable Pixel devices with continued software support.
