Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, participated in the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Kampala, Uganda. The opening ceremony was presided over by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
In his address, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the principles of the Bandung Conference, which laid the foundation for South-South solidarity. He emphasized Algeria’s consistent support for just causes, particularly its own struggle for liberation during the Algerian War of Independence.
Attaf highlighted the Bandung Conference as a pivotal moment in initiating the decolonization process. He stated, “Algeria will never forget that the first international support for its liberation cause came from this conference, which was instrumental in including it as the first decolonization issue on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly.”
Addressing pressing international issues, Attaf underscored the plight of the Palestinian people, who are caught between the hope for a sustained ceasefire and urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza, and the greater aspiration for a genuine political process leading to the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He reiterated Algeria’s steadfast position on the Sahrawi issue, emphasizing the need to empower the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with international legality and the principles of the United Nations.
Furthermore, Attaf called for a new international approach to address the nexus between security and development. This approach should be based on rebuilding trust between the Global North and South, reforming structural imbalances in international institutions – from the Security Council to financial and trade bodies – and fulfilling international commitments in areas such as development financing, climate justice, technology transfer, and support for good governance.
Minister Attaf affirmed that Algeria believes in and advocates for this approach, alongside fellow NAM member states, to build a more just, sustainable, and equitable international order. Algeria sees the Non-Aligned Movement as crucial for fostering global cooperation and advocating for the interests of developing nations on the world stage.
