Algeria is actively participating in the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 20th to 23rd, 2025. The Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamal Rezig, is leading the Algerian delegation at this crucial international economic forum.
Under the theme “Shaping the Future: Economic Transformation for Just and Sustainable Development,” UNCTAD brings together global leaders, government ministers (including those responsible for foreign affairs, finance, trade, and economy), representatives from 195 member states, heads of international organizations, economic experts, Nobel laureates, civil society representatives, development banks, and global financial and trade institutions. This high-level gathering occurs every four years and serves as a platform for in-depth discussions on pressing global economic challenges.
The conference agenda is expected to cover a wide range of critical issues, including international trade, finance, investment, and technological transformation. A key focus will be on exploring mechanisms to promote economic justice and inclusive development within the context of rapid global changes. Participants will be examining strategies to address inequalities and ensure that the benefits of economic progress are shared more equitably.
Minister Rezig is slated to present Algeria’s perspective on achieving sustainable economic transformation. His presentation will likely highlight Algeria’s efforts to diversify its exports, promote foreign trade, and strengthen the position of developing countries within the international trading system. This aligns with Algeria’s national priorities of reducing its reliance on hydrocarbons and fostering a more resilient and diversified economy. The Algerian delegation is expected to actively engage in discussions surrounding trade policies, investment strategies, and technology transfer, advocating for solutions that support the sustainable development goals and promote inclusive growth.
Algeria’s participation in UNCTAD underscores its commitment to multilateralism and its proactive role in shaping the global economic agenda. By engaging in these discussions, Algeria aims to contribute to the development of policies that foster a more just, equitable, and sustainable global economy, particularly for developing nations. The conference provides a valuable opportunity for Algeria to share its experiences, learn from others, and collaborate on solutions to shared economic challenges. The focus on economic transformation aligns perfectly with Algeria’s own national development plans and its ambition to play a more prominent role in the global marketplace. The outcomes of UNCTAD XVI are expected to have a significant impact on the future of international trade and development cooperation, and Algeria is determined to play a constructive role in shaping that future.
