Algeria & Spain Boost Security: Counter-Terrorism & Cybercrime Focus

Algeria is reinforcing its international security cooperation with Spain, particularly in critical areas such as counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, drug trafficking, and border protection. This commitment was highlighted by Algeria’s Minister of Interior and Local Communities, Said Saayoud, during a recent meeting with his Spanish counterpart.

Minister Saayoud emphasized that the meeting aligns with Algeria’s strategic objective of strengthening international security collaboration. He stated that the bilateral discussion provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on current security challenges, especially in light of escalating transnational threats. This necessitates a unified approach and the establishment of effective cooperation mechanisms.

Key discussions centered on enhancing joint efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, addressing the growing threat of cybercrime, and disrupting illegal drug trafficking networks. Securing borders and managing migration flows were also prominent topics on the agenda. The ministers acknowledged the interconnectedness of these issues and the importance of sharing intelligence and best practices.

Minister Saayoud also pointed to the positive outcomes of the recent Joint Committee for Security Cooperation meeting held in Madrid. A significant result of that meeting was an agreement to expedite the review of Algerian judicial requests related to the recovery of stolen assets. This demonstrates a concrete step towards strengthening legal cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting included high-ranking delegations from both sides, including the Director-General of National Security and the Director-General of Civil Protection, as well as Spanish immigration and border officials. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including security, immigration, data protection, road safety, and cooperation in disaster and emergency management.

The Spanish Minister’s visit to Algeria marks the first such visit since 2022 and reflects Madrid’s desire to revitalize bilateral relations after a period of relative distance. There’s a growing recognition within Spanish political circles of Algeria’s importance as a key player in the stability and security of the Mediterranean region. This renewed engagement underscores the strategic importance of the Algeria-Spain relationship.

Concluding the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed the depth of the Algerian-Spanish partnership and the commitment of both nations to continue dialogue and practical coordination. This ongoing collaboration aims to serve the interests of both populations and contribute to regional security and stability. The emphasis on practical coordination suggests a move towards more concrete actions and tangible results in the security domain.
