New York (United Nations) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark warning on Sunday regarding the increasing dangers faced by journalists and media professionals globally. He highlighted the growing threats they encounter while pursuing truth and reporting on critical issues.
The Secretary-General emphasized that the safety and security of journalists are paramount to ensuring a free and informed society. He noted a disturbing trend of rising violence, intimidation, and censorship targeting media workers in various regions around the world.
“Journalists play a vital role in holding power accountable and providing citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions,” Guterres stated. “When journalists are attacked, silenced, or imprisoned, it undermines democracy and the rule of law.”
He further elaborated on the diverse forms of threats journalists face, including physical assault, online harassment, arbitrary detention, and even targeted killings. He stressed that impunity for crimes against journalists remains a significant challenge, encouraging member states to strengthen their legal frameworks and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Secretary-General called upon governments, civil society organizations, and media outlets to work together to create a safer and more enabling environment for journalists to operate freely and without fear. He reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting media freedom and protecting journalists worldwide.
