Algiers, November 3, 2025 – Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received today his counterpart from the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek. The meeting focused on a review and assessment of the recent discussions held at the United Nations Security Council in October regarding the Western Sahara issue.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks centered on the implications of Security Council Resolution 2797, which extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
Both ministers acknowledged the importance of the resolution in upholding the fundamental principles for a just, lasting, and definitive resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. They emphasized the resolution’s focus on the necessity of negotiations between the two parties involved – the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front – and its insistence that any solution must be mutually acceptable.
Furthermore, the ministers highlighted the resolution’s emphasis on enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination. They also welcomed the extension of MINURSO’s mandate for another year, in line with the proposal submitted by the United Nations Secretary-General to the Security Council.
Minister Attaf and Minister Ould Salek exchanged views on the prospects for the UN-led political process aimed at facilitating a fair, lasting, and definitive settlement to the Western Sahara issue. This settlement, they agreed, must guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant international legality resolutions and the UN’s established doctrine on decolonization.
