Algerian Innovator Wins Top Arab Science Project Award

Algerian researcher El-Aid Dirdabou was crowned the Arab world’s top innovator Friday evening in the 17th season of “Stars of Science,” a leading Arab television program supporting scientific research and innovation.

The final stage of the competition saw intense rivalry between Dirdabou, Razan Salem Bahabri from Saudi Arabia, and Mohammed Al-Sheikh Saleh from Jordan. Ultimately, the Algerian innovator secured the title thanks to his outstanding invention: a smart watch that monitors vital signs to determine levels of vitamin D and serotonin. This allows for early detection of anxiety and depression disorders.

Dr. El-Aid Dirdabou, who holds a doctorate in physiology and animal nutrition from the University of Vienna, explained that the idea for the innovation stemmed from a personal experience. A close relative suffered from undiagnosed depression caused by a vitamin D deficiency.

“I started this project based on a promise I made to myself when I witnessed the suffering of a relative from undiagnosed depression due to vitamin D deficiency. I didn’t want others to go through the same experience,” Dirdabou said after the win. He added that the program provided him with the support and tools necessary to transform the idea into a tangible innovation that contributes to redefining methods of monitoring mental health worldwide.

This crowning achievement is another accomplishment added to the track record of young Algerian talents who continue to shine in Arab and international scientific forums. This victory highlights Algeria’s growing presence in the fields of science and technology. The innovative smartwatch has the potential to revolutionize mental health monitoring.
