Algeria Hosts Meeting to Bolster Libyan Political Solution

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria today hosted a ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Neighboring Countries Mechanism to address the ongoing crisis in Libya. The meeting saw the participation of Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, alongside Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aaty, and Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafati.

The core objective of the gathering was to facilitate in-depth consultations and exchange perspectives on the evolving situation in Libya. A central focus was identifying effective means to support the United Nations-led political process. The participating nations emphasized that, as immediate neighbors, they are profoundly affected by the Libyan crisis and possess a unique understanding of its complexities, making them deeply invested in achieving a sustainable resolution.

The meeting culminated in the adoption of a joint statement underscoring the necessity of Libyan ownership and leadership in the political process. The statement urged all Libyan parties to prioritize the interests of their nation above all else, ensuring an end to the division, the unification of political and military institutions, and the organization of parliamentary and presidential elections. The statement also reiterated the three countries’ rejection of any external interference in Libyan affairs and called for the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from the country.

Furthermore, the statement commended Algeria’s role within the United Nations Security Council in highlighting the international community’s responsibility to prevent the squandering of Libyan resources and to ensure the sound management of its frozen financial assets. The participating nations reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to support a stable and prosperous future for Libya.
