Algiers, Algeria – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over a Council of Ministers meeting today, focusing on crucial issues impacting the Algerian populace. Key discussions centered on ensuring adequate supplies of essential goods to the market in anticipation of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan in 2023.
The Council also reviewed the progress of ongoing seawater desalination plant projects and efforts to improve the supply of potable water across the nation. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the current situation of the Algerian diaspora abroad.
President Tebboune commenced the session by congratulating the newly appointed members of the government, expressing his wishes for their success. He urged them to meet the expectations of Algerian citizens and issued a series of directives pertaining to governmental performance.
Specifically, the Prime Minister was instructed to reduce the frequency of government meetings, holding them only when absolutely necessary, and to redirect efforts towards practical, on-the-ground action. The President emphasized that Algeria’s current needs lie not in enacting new laws that might complicate citizens’ lives, but rather in repealing outdated legislation.
The focus, according to the President, should be on implementing programs and projects that directly benefit millions of Algerians, with a forward-looking approach to citizen welfare and comfort, as outlined in the presidential program endorsed by the electorate. He also stressed the importance of enhanced coordination between the Director of the Presidential Cabinet and the Secretary-General of the Government to ensure diligent monitoring and strict implementation of Cabinet decisions.
The Minister of Interior, under the supervision of the Prime Minister, was tasked with establishing a schedule of field visits for government members to various provinces, prioritizing areas with urgent development needs and pressing daily concerns of the population. Ministers were cautioned against making unfounded promises with unrealistic deadlines or unclear mechanisms.
President Tebboune also mandated an end to the excessive use of formulaic political expressions that glorify individuals, particularly through media channels, and that imply every governmental activity is directly guided by the President. He emphasized the need for unwavering respect for citizens and public sentiment in all actions and interactions, stating that public satisfaction is the sole measure of good performance in building a strong and respected Algeria.
Concerning urgent matters related to digitalization, transportation, and investments, the President directed the government to immediately accelerate the digitalization process and ensure accurate data collection as a foundational operating system across all sectors, particularly in state assets, taxation, customs, and budgeting.
