US Historian Praises Algeria’s Approach to Neo-Colonialism

Algiers, Algeria – A prominent American historian, Todd Shepard, has lauded Algeria’s comprehensive strategy in combating neo-colonialism, recognizing its effectiveness in the modern era. Shepard made the remarks during a conference on “The Liberation of Peoples and the Struggle Against Colonial Domination,” held on Wednesday in Algiers as part of the 28th Algiers International Book Fair (SILA 2025).

Shepard, author of “The Invention of Decolonization: Algeria and the Remaking of France,” described Algeria’s approach as “interesting because it is proactive and encompasses all areas that could threaten national sovereignty, such as social networks, media, and educational curricula.” He emphasized the importance of vigilance in safeguarding national identity and independence.

The historian further noted the palpable sense of belonging and national spirit among Algerians. He suggested that other nations could benefit from studying and potentially adopting aspects of Algeria’s policies in this domain. Shepard expressed his admiration for the dedication of Algerian historians and writers who, through their work, highlight the significance of preserving Algeria’s hard-won independence, achieved at a great cost.

Discussing the historical trajectory of oppressed peoples seeking liberation, Shepard asserted that these populations often triumph in the end. He underscored the unique character of Algeria’s war of liberation, emphasizing that the courage displayed by Algerian revolutionaries deserves global recognition. The sacrifices made during the struggle for independence continue to resonate within Algerian society and serve as a reminder of the importance of national unity and self-determination.

The conference provided a platform for scholars and intellectuals to exchange ideas and perspectives on the ongoing challenges of neo-colonialism and the importance of preserving national sovereignty in a rapidly changing world. Shepard’s comments have sparked considerable discussion within Algeria, further fueling the national discourse on identity, independence, and the future of the nation.
