Algeria Sees Unprecedented Solar Panel Import Surge

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria has experienced a remarkable surge in solar panel imports during the first nine months of 2025. The country imported 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of solar panels, primarily from China, a staggering increase compared to the mere 20 megawatts (MW) imported during the same period in 2024. This represents an approximate 70-fold rise, signaling a significant acceleration in Algeria’s renewable energy projects.

January and September saw the highest import volumes, with January recording 390 MW, the highest single-month figure since Algeria began importing solar panels. September followed closely with 240 MW. The remaining months saw the following import volumes: February (10 MW), March (60 MW), April (160 MW), May (150 MW), June (90 MW), July (210 MW), and August (90 MW).

The import trend demonstrates a clear upward trajectory throughout the year. Imports reached 460 MW in the first quarter, increased to 400 MW in the second quarter, and then jumped to 540 MW in the third quarter. This sustained growth coincides with the launch of new clean energy electricity generation projects across the nation.

Algeria aims to diversify its energy mix and reduce its reliance on natural gas for electricity production. The country plans to increase its installed renewable energy capacity to over 15 GW by 2035. This initiative is part of a comprehensive national vision to achieve sustainable energy security and enhance energy independence.

Several major projects are currently underway to support this goal. These include a new 80 MW solar power plant as part of Sonelgaz’s program, which aims to install 3 GW of clean energy capacity. The first phase of this plant is expected to be completed between December 2025 and January 2026.

In 2024, Algeria launched a program to build 20 solar power plants, including 15 plants with a total capacity of nearly 2 GW, and an additional 5 plants with a capacity of 1 GW. These projects, along with others in the pipeline, demonstrate Algeria’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
