Washington D.C. – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a stark warning regarding the rapidly deteriorating situation in Sudan’s North Darfur state. The agency highlighted the escalating crisis as violence spreads beyond El Fasher, the state capital.
The warning underscores the growing concerns within the international community about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict. OCHA emphasized that the expansion of violence threatens to exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, placing immense strain on already limited resources and further endangering civilian populations.
“The situation is becoming increasingly dire,” a spokesperson for OCHA stated. “We are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire. The spread of violence is hindering our ability to deliver critical aid to those who need it most.”
The agency reports that access to essential services, including healthcare, food, and water, is being severely disrupted. Displacement is also on the rise, with more and more people fleeing their homes in search of safety. This influx of displaced persons is placing additional pressure on host communities, which are themselves struggling to cope with the effects of the conflict.
OCHA is calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urging all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law. The agency is also appealing to the international community to increase its support for humanitarian operations in North Darfur. Without a significant increase in assistance, OCHA warns that the crisis could spiral out of control, leading to even greater suffering and loss of life.
DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.
