Benin and France Conduct Joint Maritime Security Drills

Cotonou, Benin – The French amphibious assault ship Tonnerre recently concluded a week-long port call in Cotonou, Benin, marking a significant step in strengthened military cooperation between Benin and France. The visit, which took place from November 2nd to 9th, focused on enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

During the exercise, Beninese and French forces engaged in joint activities including coastal reconnaissance training, helicopter drills, and onboard fire-fighting exercises. These activities were designed to improve coordination and operational readiness between the two nations’ armed forces.

The Tonnerre’s arrival was marked by a welcoming ceremony attended by Benin’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Fernand Ahoy, French Ambassador Nadege Chouat, and European Union Ambassador Sandra Platteau. Following the official welcome, the ship was opened to the public, providing civilian and military personnel with the opportunity to tour its facilities and learn about its capabilities.

The Beninese Army General Staff emphasized that the visit reflects a “shared desire of Benin and France to contribute to making the Gulf of Guinea more secure by strengthening the fight against piracy, terrorism, and illicit trafficking.” The exercises highlight the commitment of both nations to regional stability.

The Tonnerre, the second-largest ship in the French Navy after the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, possesses extensive capabilities in amphibious operations, command and control, and medical support. This makes it a key asset in supporting regional cooperation and maritime security within the framework of France’s Operation Corymbe in the region. The exercise is expected to significantly bolster security in the Gulf of Guinea.
