The Algerian national football team has climbed to 29th place globally in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking, published on July 20 following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Desert Foxes’ improved position reflects their performance at the global tournament, where they reached the Round of 32 before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver. Algeria finished the competition in 30th place among the 48 participating nations.
Captain Riyad Mahrez and his teammates played four matches during the tournament. They began their campaign with a 3-0 defeat against Argentina before recovering to beat Jordan 2-1. Algeria then secured qualification for the knockout stage following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Austria.
Despite their elimination by Switzerland, the Algerian team demonstrated determination and resilience during its return to football’s most prestigious competition.
Spain, meanwhile, returned to the top of the world ranking after winning the World Cup for the second time in its history. La Roja defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute. Spain and Argentina consequently exchanged places at the top of the FIFA ranking.
The Spanish national team had occupied second place in the previous ranking issued on June 11, at the beginning of the tournament. Its successful World Cup campaign enabled it to regain the leading position.
Algeria is also ranked among Africa’s leading national teams, ahead of Egypt in the latest standings. Egypt reached the Round of 16 before losing 3-2 to Argentina, despite having established a two-goal advantage during the match.
Algeria’s 29th-place ranking provides a positive foundation as the national team prepares for its upcoming continental and international competitions.
