Algeria and Zimbabwe Forge Strategic Defense Partnership

Algiers, DZWatch – Algeria and Zimbabwe are deepening their strategic partnership with a focus on bolstering defense and security cooperation across Africa. This comes as Lieutenant General Said Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, welcomed Zimbabwe’s Minister of Defence and War Veterans to Algeria for an official visit this week.

General Chengriha emphasized that the visit underscores the strong historical ties between the two nations and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in defense and security. He highlighted the roots of the Algeria-Zimbabwe relationship in their shared struggle against colonialism, noting their continued adherence to principles of African solidarity and advocacy for the continent’s just causes.

“This visit embodies the deep fraternal and historical bonds that unite the Algerian and Zimbabwean people,” General Chengriha stated, “and expresses the common will of the two countries’ leadership to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of defense and security.”

The Chief of Staff further noted the impetus given to bilateral relations following the official visit of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Algeria in July, at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. That visit provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening coordination and expanding cooperation on African and international issues of common interest. Several agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed, covering various fields to enhance the partnership between the two countries.

Algeria remains open to all constructive African cooperation initiatives aimed at consolidating security and stability on the continent, and strengthening its defense capabilities through partnerships based on mutual respect and shared interests, General Chengriha concluded. This strategic alliance signals a strengthened commitment to regional security and collaborative defense strategies within the African continent.
