Macron Praises Tebboune’s Decision to Release Boualem Sansal

Algiers – French President Emmanuel Macron has lauded Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to release writer Boualem Sansal. Macron described the move as a ‘humanitarian act’ and the result of discreet diplomatic efforts.

According to French media reports, Macron stated that German mediation played a crucial role in achieving this humanitarian outcome. He emphasized the fruitful collaboration between Paris and Berlin in recent months that led to Sansal’s release.

A statement from the Algerian Presidency confirmed that President Tebboune responded positively to a request from his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to grant a special pardon to Sansal. The German request was reportedly based on humanitarian considerations linked to Sansal’s health.

The statement further indicated that German authorities would facilitate Sansal’s transfer to Germany for medical treatment. This development brings an end to a contentious issue in Algerian-French relations that had evolved from a judicial matter into a complex political and diplomatic file.

Macron expressed his appreciation for President Tebboune’s humanitarian gesture and reiterated his willingness to continue dialogue with Algeria on matters of mutual interest.

Boualem Sansal, 81, who is battling cancer, was sentenced to five years in prison by an Algerian court in July before being granted a presidential pardon. His lawyers, Pierre Corno-Gentile and Francois Zimeray, welcomed the decision, noting that his release followed a period of hardship. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu expressed hope that the writer would soon be reunited with his family to receive the necessary medical care.
