China Warns Japan of ‘Crushing Defeat’ Over Taiwan Intervention

Beijing has issued a stern warning to Tokyo, stating that any military intervention in Taiwan would result in a “crushing defeat” for Japan. The warning comes amid heightened tensions following recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Defense, Jiang Bin, described Takaichi’s comments as “irresponsible and extremely dangerous.” Jiang stated, “If the Japanese side does not learn the lessons of history and dares to take risks, or even use force to intervene in the Taiwan issue, it will only suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, which possesses an iron will, and pay a heavy price.”

Takaichi sparked diplomatic friction with Beijing after suggesting in parliament last week that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute an “existential threat” to Japan, potentially triggering a military response from Tokyo.

The escalating tensions also involve diplomatic personnel. Xu Jian, a senior Chinese diplomat in Osaka, reportedly posted controversial remarks on social media platform X regarding Takaichi’s statements on Taiwan, which were later deleted. Japan’s Foreign Ministry responded by summoning the Chinese ambassador to express their disapproval of what they deemed “extremely inappropriate” comments.

In addition to the diplomatic row, China has voiced concerns regarding Japan’s recent military and security activities, including what it perceives as ambiguity surrounding Japan’s non-nuclear principles. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Japan’s decision not to rule out acquiring nuclear submarines indicates a significant “negative” shift in policy. The ministry has urged Japan to reconsider its stance and adhere to its previously stated commitments.

DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as they become available. The increasing friction between China and Japan over Taiwan raises concerns about regional stability and potential for further escalation. Analysts suggest that a diplomatic solution is crucial to de-escalate tensions and prevent a potential conflict.
