Qatar Reaffirms Support for Sudan’s Unity, Condemns Atrocities in Al-Fashir

Qatar has reiterated its unwavering support for the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan, while expressing deep shock and condemnation over the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Al-Fashir, Darfur. This strong statement was delivered by Ambassador Hind bint Abd Al-Rahman Al-Muftah, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, during a special session of the Human Rights Council addressing the escalating crisis in the region.

Ambassador Al-Muftah emphasized Qatar’s commitment to protecting the rights of the Sudanese people and categorically rejects any form of interference in Sudan’s internal affairs. She stated, “The time has come for the world to recognize this humanitarian tragedy and work diligently to end it. Each passing day reveals more atrocities, with innocent civilians paying the price, as witnessed in Al-Fashir and its surrounding areas.”

The Qatari representative further called for an immediate cessation of violations and crimes against the Sudanese population, demanding that perpetrators be held accountable for their actions.

The UN Human Rights Council, at the conclusion of its special session, unanimously adopted a resolution mandating the formation of a mission to investigate the alleged violations committed in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur. The Council tasked the investigators with identifying all those involved in the atrocities in Al-Fashir, to help bring them to justice.

Reports indicate that the RSF gained control of Al-Fashir last month, leading to widespread allegations of massacres against civilians, according to local and international organizations. There are growing concerns this could further entrench the geographical division of the country.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people. The situation demands urgent international attention and a concerted effort to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution.
