Sudan: Army Claims Recapture of Key Sites in North Kordofan

Fighting continues across multiple fronts in Sudan’s Kordofan State as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) clash. The SAF has announced the recapture of several strategic locations in the northern part of the state.

Military sources confirmed that the army regained control of the areas of Kazqil and Umm Dam Hajj Ahmed, north of Kordofan, following intense clashes with the RSF. The SAF reportedly launched extensive military operations, preceded by heavy artillery strikes and drone attacks targeting RSF positions throughout the Kordofan region. These operations allegedly forced the RSF to retreat towards the Al-Hamadi area, near Al-Dubaibat in the south of the state.

The Kazqil area holds significant strategic importance due to its location on the road connecting the cities of Al-Dubaibat and Al-Daling, south of Al-Ubayyid. This makes it a crucial hub for any military or logistical movements in northern Kordofan.

Meanwhile, a Sudanese army commander in Babnusa asserted that the city remains steadfast against RSF attacks. He noted that the Sudanese Air Force conducted concentrated airstrikes on RSF positions within the city to alleviate pressure on the army forces besieged inside. Babnusa has been under siege by the RSF for over a year, with army forces relying on airdrops for supplies. Fighting continues between the two sides for control of the city.

Since mid-April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately 15 million people, according to the United Nations and local authorities. The situation remains dire, with no immediate end to the fighting in sight. The conflict is causing a major humanitarian crisis. International efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed.
