Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel-Aty, has reiterated his country’s firm opposition to any attempts to divide the Gaza Strip or displace its Palestinian population. In a statement released following an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Abdel-Aty emphasized that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.
According to the statement, Abdel-Aty highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to solidify the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement and ensure the full implementation of its provisions, which aim to foster peace within the Gaza Strip. Discussions also encompassed security arrangements, the transitional phase, and the critical importance of empowering the Palestinian Authority within the territory.
“Egypt categorically rejects any attempt to divide the Gaza Strip or displace the Palestinian people,” Abdel-Aty stated, underscoring the fundamental principle of preserving the unity of Palestinian territories as a cornerstone for any just, durable, and comprehensive solution in the region.
The Foreign Minister reaffirmed that the two-state solution, encompassing both a Palestinian and an Israeli state, remains the only realistic option for achieving lasting peace in the region. His remarks come amidst recent reports in Israeli media outlets suggesting potential plans to divide the Gaza Strip into two distinct zones.
These reports have sparked concern and renewed focus on the long-term stability and future of the Gaza Strip. Egypt’s firm stance underscores its commitment to a unified Palestinian territory and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
