Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed the commencement of iron ore exploitation from the Gara Djebilet mine in the first quarter of 2026. The announcement was made during a Council of Ministers meeting held on Sunday, where the President emphasized the strategic importance of the project.
According to a statement released by the Council of Ministers, President Tebboune considers this undertaking a pivotal step towards solidifying Algeria’s economic sovereignty and diversifying its resources beyond hydrocarbons. He stressed that the launch of the Gara Djebilet mine will mark a new era for the country’s economic independence.
Following a presentation on the progress of the Gara Djebilet mine and the Tindouf-Bechar railway line, the President issued firm instructions to accelerate efforts on the project. He highlighted its strategic significance and urged all stakeholders to ensure its timely completion.
The Council of Ministers also approved the establishment of new iron ore processing plants in Tindouf, Bechar, and Naama, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to developing the iron and steel industry.
President Tebboune also mandated that the first shipment of iron ore be transported via the railway line to the Tosyali iron and steel complex in Oran, starting in 2026. This milestone is expected to significantly reduce Algeria’s reliance on iron ore imports and pave the way for self-sufficiency in the long term.
Furthermore, President Tebboune instructed officials to prepare for the inauguration of the new railway line connecting Tindouf and Bechar in January 2026. He envisioned the event as a national celebration, marking Algeria’s entry into a new phase of major economic development.
This ambitious project underscores Algeria’s commitment to diversifying its economy and harnessing its natural resources for sustainable growth. The Gara Djebilet mine is poised to become a cornerstone of Algeria’s industrial development, contributing significantly to job creation and economic prosperity.
The successful exploitation of the Gara Djebilet mine is expected to have a transformative impact on Algeria’s economy, reducing its dependence on hydrocarbon revenues and fostering a more diversified and resilient economic structure.
