Algiers, Algeria – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has instructed the Minister of Finance to prepare a proposal for increasing both the national minimum wage and unemployment benefits. The directive was issued following a Council of Ministers meeting where various national projects and initiatives were discussed.
The meeting, chaired by President Tebboune, who also serves as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, addressed several key issues including the promotion of administrative districts in the High Plateaus and the South to full-fledged provinces. This initiative aims to bolster regional development and decentralize administrative power.
Progress updates were also presented on the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine project and the Tindouf-Bechar mining railway line. These projects are considered vital for Algeria’s economic diversification and industrial growth, promising to unlock significant mineral resources and create new employment opportunities.
The Council further reviewed the construction of the 500-bed University Hospital in Constantine, a project aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services in the eastern region of the country. Discussions also covered the acquisition of specialized equipment to support the development of digitalization initiatives across various sectors.
Following a report by the Prime Minister on the government’s activities over the past two weeks, and subsequent discussions among ministers, President Tebboune emphasized the importance of addressing the socio-economic needs of Algerian citizens. The order to review the minimum wage and unemployment benefits reflects the government’s commitment to improving the living standards of vulnerable populations and ensuring a more equitable distribution of wealth.
Details regarding the proposed increases and the timeline for implementation are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The government hopes these measures will provide much-needed relief to households grappling with rising living costs and economic hardship.
