The African Development Bank (AfDB) has expressed strong interest in contributing to railway infrastructure projects in Algeria. This comes after a meeting held in Algiers on Monday between Algeria’s Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, and the President of the AfDB Group, Sidi Ould Tah.
During the meeting, discussions focused on key railway projects currently underway in Algeria, with a particular emphasis on the strategic project to connect the north and south of the country. Minister Djellaoui highlighted the potential for the AfDB to play a vital role through providing loans to finance sections of this ambitious project. He also emphasized the importance of bolstering the sector’s capabilities in the area of basic infrastructure.
A statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Public Works detailed that an expanded working session took place, involving representatives from the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of Railway Investments. This session provided a platform to showcase the national railway program’s short- and medium-term goals, as well as future development prospects for the sector.
Minister Djellaoui underscored the significant economic and social benefits of these railway projects, emphasizing the extensive expertise possessed by Algerian professionals in executing large-scale infrastructure projects.
President of the AfDB Group, Sidi Ould Tah, conveyed the group’s keen interest in Algeria’s experience in implementing railway projects. He affirmed the AfDB’s desire to contribute to the realization of future projects in this crucial sector, signaling a potential for increased cooperation and investment in Algeria’s railway infrastructure.
