Why is Russia Targeting Ukraine’s Railway System?

For centuries, Ukraine’s railway network has been more than just a transportation system. It has served as a vital artery, a symbol of progress, and a crucial component of the nation’s historical economy. Today, however, it has become a key battleground in the logistical war with Russia.

The role of Ukraine’s railways extends beyond transporting passengers and goods. They now carry soldiers and military supplies to the front lines, maintaining connections between major cities despite relentless attacks, numbering over 3,700 since last August.

According to Yuri Sak, former advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, the railway system is a critical logistical lifeline for the Ukrainian army. He asserts that Russia is deliberately targeting it to weaken the country’s defense capabilities and inflict harm on civilian life.

The roots of Ukraine’s railways trace back to the 19th century, during a period of imperial control. These lines served not only the interests of the Russian Empire but also connected to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, linking rich agricultural lands and industrial centers to ports and global trade. Grain and minerals were transported from the heart of Ukraine to Baltic ports, providing the empires with a strategic economic outlet.

Beyond economics, the railways became deeply embedded in Ukrainian and Soviet culture. During the Soviet era, they symbolized collective work and sacrifice. They featured prominently in literature, glorifying workers and infrastructure as part of the socialist project. This cemented the railways’ place as a part of national identity, representing not only transport but also resilience and national development. The Ukrainian railway is more than just tracks and trains; it represents resistance.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s railways have assumed a vital logistical role, transporting troops, supplies, and weapons, while also maintaining civilian connections between cities. This crucial function has made the railway system a strategic target.
