Authorities Seize Over Half a Ton of Bananas in El Oued

El Oued, November 19, 2025 – Police in El Oued have seized over 500 kilograms of bananas during a routine market inspection. The operation, aimed at monitoring vegetable and fruit sales, uncovered two vendors allegedly selling the fruit at prices exceeding legal limits.

According to officials, the first vendor was found to be in possession of 168 kilograms of bananas, while the second had 362 kilograms. The total amount seized was 530 kilograms (5.3 quintals).

DZWatch has learned that the vendors were displaying the bananas for sale on the sidewalk without the necessary commercial permits. Furthermore, they were reportedly selling the fruit for over 400 dinars, surpassing the legally mandated price ceiling for bananas.

Authorities, in coordination with trade officials, have initiated legal proceedings against the vendors. This seizure highlights ongoing efforts to regulate market prices and ensure fair trade practices in the region. The incident serves as a reminder to vendors to adhere to pricing regulations and possess the appropriate documentation for their businesses.

The authorities have not released further details about the investigation but confirmed that they will continue to monitor market activities to prevent similar violations in the future. This action is part of a broader campaign to protect consumers from price gouging and ensure the availability of affordable goods.
