In the context of a rapprochement between Russia and Algeria that has been ongoing for months, the two countries are now turning to nuclear medicine. The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in this area.

Rosatom, a Russian state-owned company specializing in the nuclear energy sector, will develop nuclear medicine technologies in Algeria. An ad hoc memorandum of understanding was signed on Monday in Vienna, on the sidelines of the 67th regular session of the IAEA General Conference, with COMENA.

“The parties agreed to implement joint projects in the field of cooperation in the use of non-energy nuclear technologies in the health sector and in the development of nuclear medicine in Algeria, including in the context of the creation of nuclear medicine centers,” Rosatom said in a statement.

The document was signed by Rosatom Deputy General Director for International Affairs Boris Arsenyev and Abdelhamid Mellah, Algerian Commissioner for Atomic Energy.
