The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2023 was announced today by the granting authority. Three scientists were awarded for their work on “experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses to study the dynamics of electrons in matter.”

The winners of the prize are Pierre Augustini from France, Ferenc Krausz from Austria and Hungary, and Anne L’Huillier from France and Sweden.

The prize, which has been increased to approximately one million dollars this year, is presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

In a statement, the Academy explained that the trio has provided “new tools for humanity to explore the world of electrons inside atoms, which could be beneficial for medical diagnosis.”

Yesterday, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was also announced by the granting authority, honoring Katalin Karikó from Hungary and Drew Weissman from the United States for their discoveries that contributed to the development of effective vaccines against the coronavirus.
