Algiers – A French sailor was successfully evacuated from a vessel off the coast of Ain Benian, north of Algiers, following a distress call received by Algerian Coast Guard units. The rescue operation, coordinated by the National Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Center (CNOS), took place early this morning.
The CNOS received a distress signal at 07:10 AM local time from a sailor aboard the French-flagged sailing vessel “SY-FRILEUSE.” The vessel was located approximately 57 nautical miles north of Ain Benian, en route from Sardinia to the Strait of Gibraltar. The sailor, identified as Nicolas Charpy, a 60-year-old French national, was reportedly suffering from a medical emergency.
In response to the distress call, the CNOS, in collaboration with the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Center in Algiers, immediately launched a rescue operation. An AS-12 search and rescue helicopter from the 560th Search and Rescue Helicopter Regiment was deployed to the scene.
The helicopter crew successfully extracted the sailor from the vessel and transported him swiftly to the Zeralda hospital for urgent medical attention. Sources indicate that the sailor is currently in stable condition.
This operation underscores the humanitarian role of the Algerian Coast Guard units, demonstrating their commitment to saving lives at sea under all circumstances. The swift and efficient response highlights the preparedness and capabilities of the Algerian naval forces in ensuring maritime safety and security within its territorial waters.
