KINSHASA – The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, held official talks with the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, in Kinshasa on Friday. Discussions centered on strengthening cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the areas of economy and investment, as well as addressing key regional and international developments.
President Tshisekedi expressed his gratitude for Qatar’s efforts in brokering the Doha Peace Agreement between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group. He hailed the agreement as a significant achievement in advancing the peace process and alleviating the suffering of thousands of displaced people.
The Emir congratulated President Tshisekedi on the agreement, expressing his hope for its successful implementation and reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in the region and around the world.
The two leaders witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including one concerning political consultations on issues of mutual interest. Another MoU focused on cooperation in the field of ports between Qatar Ports Company (Mwani Qatar) and the National Transport Office of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Furthermore, a MoU was signed between the Qatar Fund for Development and the Congolese Ministry of Social Affairs to support an emergency response project in several Congolese states.
“Fruitful discussions today with the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, giving new impetus to cooperation between our countries in various fields,” the Emir stated in a post on X. “We exchanged views on several common issues, and we look forward to further coordination and partnership in a way that achieves mutual interests and contributes to enhancing stability and prosperity for all.”
In related news, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) announced the signing of a MoU with Ivanhoe Mines, a Canadian mining company operating in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, coinciding with the Emir’s visit.
The visit underscores Qatar’s growing interest in strengthening ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo and its commitment to playing a constructive role in the region’s development and stability.
